Italian horror’s Big Daddy is one Mario Bava; fellow countrymen including Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci and Umberto Lenzi often struggled to escape his long-stretching shadow. Bava’s hallucinatory directorial technique was (arguably) never in better form than it was here.
